FAQs
Everything You Need To Know
What type of smoke alarms are required in Queensland and Victoria?
Both Queensland and Victoria require photoelectric smoke alarms that meet AS 3786-2014. Ionisation alarms are not compliant for new installs and replacements. Alarms must be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound. Placement rules include alarms in every bedroom and in hallways outside sleeping areas.
How often should smoke alarms be tested and replaced?
You should test smoke alarms monthly using the test button to confirm they sound properly. Professional checks during routine electrical maintenance help confirm positioning, interconnection and overall condition. Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years, even if they still beep. If you notice chirping, faults or physical damage, organise service or replacement straight away.
Do rental properties need smoke alarm certification?
Yes, rental properties must meet current smoke alarm legislation before a lease starts and throughout the tenancy. Landlords are responsible for installing compliant alarms and arranging required checks. Tenants should test alarms regularly and report issues promptly. A professional certification and compliance assessment ensures the property remains safe and meets legal standards.
